It was coined during the brutal Battle of Verdun in World War I, when French General Robert Nivelle rallied his troops to hold the line. This battle cry echoed again with Romanian soldiers at the Battle of Mărășești and was a defiant chant against fascism during the Spanish Civil War.
 
The phrase became a symbol of unyielding resistance, worn proudly on the badges of French units and Canada's Royal 22e Régiment during World War II. Fast forward to today, and it's still a rallying cry, used by the 155th Ukrainian Infantry Brigade in their fight in the Russo-Ukrainian War.
